From savings in electricity and maintenance bills to decreased carbon footprint, a lot of companies are turning to energy efficient LED lighting to cut down operational costs, improve their bottom lines and solidify their environmental credentials.

Here are five big-name overseas companies realising the benefits of LED lighting in a big way.

Chase Bank

In February this year, it was announced that around 5,000 Chase Bank branches will undergo LED retrofits involving a total of 1.4 million LED lamps. Covering a projected retail banking space of 25 million square feet, the project is expected to be completed by 2017. This will cut the company’s lighting energy use by 50 percent.

Santander

Santander started rolling out a retrofit project covering the banking company’s 800 branches and 14 office buildings in the UK, which is expected to cut energy costs by more than 50 percent. The project is backed by the UK Green Investment Bank and Sustainable Development Capital Limited with an investment of GBP 17.5 million. The installation involves 90,000 LED light fittings and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

GM

In 2013, car manufacturer General Motors implemented a retrofit at its Lordstown site in Ohio, replacing its old lighting system of 1000-watt and 400-watt metal halide fixtures with more than 5,600 LED light fittings. In the first phase of the installation alone, which involved 1,600 LED fittings, the site’s power consumption was reduced by more than 80 percent.

Delta Airlines

In a bid to improve operating and maintenance costs for its whole fleet of more than 700 planes, American airline company Delta Airlines committed in April last year to replace the lighting system of its entire fleet with energy-efficient LED lighting. The USD 8 million project is scheduled to be completed by 2018.

Kroger

Aiming to improve the lighting in its service stations while cutting costs and CO2 emissions, US-based retailer The Kroger Company rolled out in November last year a multi-year LED retrofitting project. The project covers nearly 75 percent of the company’s 1,300 service centres all over the county.

Crystal Universe interactive led lights

teamLab’s Crystal Universe

The DMM.PLANETS Art exhibition by Japanese art collective teamLab is among the latest art installations in the world to make use of interactive LED lights. Considered one of this year’s largest art exhibitions in Japan, the project features four attractions, three of which are equipped with LED lighting technology to provide an otherworldly experience to visitors. The art exhibit makes use of around 330,000 units of LEDs. Similar to a lot of LED strip light variants available today, the LEDs can project different colours, and the installation uses this to create different nature-inspired effects. The DMM.PLANETS Art exhibit includes three […]

The Climate Group’s LED Scale-up Project

UK-based non-profit organisation The Climate Group is rolling out an initiative that aims to promote LED street lighting adoption worldwide, called LED Scale-up. The purpose of the initiative is to urge every city in the world to implement LED retrofits by 2025. To be able to meet this goal, The Climate Group will focus on key areas. Global LED consultation – The goal of this initiative is to encourage key decision makers to participate in LED consultations, which aim to identify the various issues and bottlenecks that hinder LED adoption through interviews and informal discussions. On-site visualisation: LED and safety in work sites

On-site visualisation (OSV) is a new technology based on light emitting diodes (LEDs) that makes it easier to monitor potential hazards on construction sites. Using a device equipped with LEDs, OSV measures irregularities at building sites and sends a colour-coded signal to indicate if there is danger of collapse. This technology provides a new level of safety for workers on construction sites, minimising risk not just to property but also to human life. Safety on construction sites The safety of workers in high-risk jobs like construction work has always been a concern on projects. While being able to finish a […]
